Client Problem

  • Our clients were some City of London businesses which were concerned over development proposals from a neighbouring business
  • They believed the proposals as they stood would seriously damage the setting of their own premises
  • The developer had done a land sale deal with the council, so there was considerable political support and momentum for the proposals

Our Approach

  • We worked with the clients to develop a strategy which would ultimately allow the scheme but make several important changes to it
  • We piggybacked onto an existing local group to lobby for changes to the application
  • Helped by us, the group lobbied local politicians and council officers
  • We represented the group and our clients at the relevant council meetings
  • We initially objected to the scheme and managed to get it refused at committee

Result

  • We forced the council to re-evaluate the scheme as proposed
  • A new approach was adopted with consultation on a new landscape brief prior to the scheme finally being given consent
  • The situation of our clients’ premises were protected, and the local green space and on-street parking that our clients were desperate to protect were saved

“To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.”
From The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams, 1980
